Wine Tasting Can Be Fun
By: J.Ferreira
After spending many years in the Restaurant business, I thought it would be
a good idea to use what I had learned about Wine & Food and share it with the world.
My wife and I had the privilege of taking some of our customers to a few of the best wineries in Portugal. We were able to buy
Port wine from the local producers in five litre jugs that rivaled the best commercial brands.
One memorable winery visit took place in a beautiful setting in the city of Viseu, the heart of the demarcated region of
Dão.
Our wine tasting started in the early afternoon, one that will be remembered forever; however, some had to be reminded of
it.
When we saw this table we wondered about its purpose; so many glasses but so few bottles.
Not for long. Our host, an oenologist in the Dão region, tried to explain how to use all these glasses and I tried to
translate. You were not supposed to drink the wine, but just swirl it in your mouth and then spit it out. Something must have been lost
in the translation and as one of our Guests put it;
"Why Waste It"!
This experience was a pleasure for all, but a phenomenal headache for some; no wonder we had to remind them of this day.
